Project Details:

Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 is delivering a 6.7km extension south of the existing tram network to link Broadbeach South and Burleigh Heads. Key project features of Stage 3:

  • 6.7km extension from Broadbeach South to Burleigh Heads

  • Dual track in the centre of the Gold Coast Highway.

  • 8 stations

  • Retain 2 traffic lanes either side of light rail tracks

  • 5 additional tram

  • A journey time of around 16 to 17 minutes from Broadbeach South station to Burleigh Heads

McFadyen's Scope:

  • Installation of approximately 11,000 metres of stormwater drainage, ranging from 225mm to 1650mm in diameter

  • 750 drainage pits

  • All works were carried out through a high service corridor in a live traffic environment, requiring careful staging and coordination to maintain access and keep the project moving

  • Ground conditions presented ongoing complexity, with very sandy soils and works taking place below the purged tidal water table. Excavations were completed using trench boxes and shoring systems up to 6.5 metres deep, supported by spear dewatering and water management systems to maintain safe and stable working conditions.
